Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)

The purpose of the Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) procedures is to ensure that VITE’s lecturers can identify LLN skill levels and assist learners with LLN skills needs, in order to provide them with as much opportunity as possible to complete their learning and assessment requirements.

1/ What is Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)?

  • Language is spoken words, listening, non-verbal gestures and body language.
  • Literacy is the ability to read and use written information, write appropriately, recognize and use numbers, mathematical signs and symbols within a text.
  • Numeracy is the ability to apply mathematical skills with confidence.

2/ Why is LLN assessment important?

It’s a requirement by the Vanuatu Qualification Authority (VQA) that all Registered Training Providers (RTP) must carry out LLN assessment according to the Vanuatu National Adult Language, Literacy & Numeracy Framework (VNALLNF) in order to:

  • Find out learners’ Language, Literacy & Numeracy competencies;
  • To ensure each learner is competent to undertake study within the required LLN level of each respective study program;
  • Assist learners to improve their LLN skills in order to cope with study requirements.

3/ Levels of LLN alignment with VITE study Program

Find below the LLN required band number for each program of study offered at VITE.

4/ How can the LLN process help candidates complete their program of study at VITE?

LLN is compulsory for ALL VITE candidates.

  • The LLN Assessment is done either in the English or French language;
  • A candidate’s LLN competencies are assessed by VITE LLN Assessors and if successful s/he may proceed with courses within a particular program of study;
  • Where a candidate fails to meet the required LLN band, the candidate MUST go through a LLN bridging course prior to commencing the intended study program;
  • Continuous LLN support will be provided during the duration of study through the Student Support Center.

5/ When do candidates need to sit LLN Assessment?

Upon receiving offer letter from VITE to study and prior to enrollment to any intended program of study, all successful candidates need to go through LLN assessment.
